Laos Ministry of Health trains over 300 staff

EU funded project

The Ministry of Health in Laos is about to conclude this month the training of 330 staff members of the central and provincial health network in the use of the information available in the recently upgraded and renewed Health Management Information System. The system is a routine monthly information system which gathers service delivery data and coverage data. Routine information is provided on outpatient and inpatient contacts including main diagnosis, age and sex. A large portion of the information covers mother and child health (MCH) services.

Indicators

A crucial step for the curriculum development has been to ensure transparency and consensus for the various users of the Health Management Information System to establish a nation wide agreement on the definition and interpretation of  indicators used in the systems. This is in it self already is an important outcome of the project under way.The newly developed indicators are appreciated by most of the stakeholders and therefore will start to improve the data quality health information in Laos.

Curriculum development

In the spring of 2009 the Central Training team of the of Department of Statistics has developed and tested a 4 day curriculum to train the network in the use and interpretation of the information available in the system.
